Beliefs – Just S**t We Make Up!

Beliefs. We all have them.

Some are empowering – they can be the catalyst for positive change and can be used to take us where we want to go.

Some are limiting – these ones hold us back. They often repeat in our subconscious minds and falsely tell us what we’re not capable of and what we can’t achieve.

They’re all – both empowering and limiting – convenient assumptions that we conjure up – basically, they’re just sh** that we make up. They are formed through the filters that we have been pre-programmed with throughout our life – from our experiences, our memories, our parents, media and many other influences. Over time they carve their own neural pathways until we find our ego telling us them.. without even conscious awareness.

The only difference between people that reach their dreams and those that don’t.. is what they believe to be true.

Here’s the thing that I LOVE about beliefs – if they’re not working for us, we have the power to change them. An empowering belief will build your confidence and prepare you for greater success.

Like I said, they’re just sh** that we make up – so why not create ones that will work for us..

Here’s how –

1. Turn your negative thoughts in to positive ones… Bring awareness to your thoughts and as you catch yourself with a limiting thought, devise a statement that opposes it and resonates with you for e.g. if you find yourself thinking that you don’t have what it takes, use a statement like “I have everything within me right now to achieve all that I want”

2. Keep reminding yourself of your new belief – SEVERAL TIMES A DAY! (remember, its not yet set in the subconscious, so you HAVE to keep at it until it sticks). Use your phone to set reminders, post it all over your house, write in lipstick on your mirror – WHATEVER works for you.

3. When your new empowering belief is brought to your attention, VISUALISE this new confident thought with determination and optimism – EVERY TIME. What you’re doing here is developing a new habit. Any new habit has to be worked on consistently with focus. This is a process that will take time… but the effects will carry on to all areas of your life and the results will be well worth it.

If how we were living our lives were working for us, then we’d feel it.

We’d know.

We’d experience a feeling of contentment and satisfaction… and deep down we wouldn’t feel the need to make a change.

 

Contentment and satisfaction aren’t what most people feel though.

Most have a yearning inside that whispers “I’m ready to live a life more deeply lead”.

So, we look for the change.

There are certain principals and concepts that we need to adapt in our lives that are going to enable us to experience better results and to be the change that we want to be within ourselves.

It’s about opening up our mind to new experiences and ways of thinking that we hadn’t even thought of before (because if we did know how to think them then we would know how to access them).

We start with changing our way of thinking which opens up new possibilities within our mind which in turn is going to change our results.

The theory is simple – when we think in new ways, we go beyond our current level of thinking. This is experienced in the form of a ‘blank’ or confused mind – don’t you just love it when your mind goes blank?  I do!

It means I’ve reached the current edge of my thinking. I’m expanding the sphere that is my mind and pushing against its boundaries. I’ve reached what is known as a Boundary Condition.

Our ‘spheres’ are super flexible and love to be stretched. When we reach the outer edge of our thinking and lean on the wall of our sphere, it gives way a little and this is the moment when you push.

Dig deep in order to expand beyond what’s familiar and comfortable. Make the zone of familiarity larger, make your experiences greater and make your life fuller.

 

Yes, this can be an uncomfortable moment (or few) and that’s because we were made to feel this way!

Many eons ago, as caveman, this sense of fear to move beyond what we know, was necessary. It was a protection mechanism.

When caveman came face to face with uncertainty, that caution and overwhelming sense of fear ensured survival.

Well, that was all well and good when life was based on survival, but it’s certainly not needed today – what with opportunity knocking, endless options and a world of uncertainty where important decisions must be made on a daily basis.

 

The great news is, once we’ve pushed and stretched our mind, we’ve expanded our comfort zone and THAT now becomes what is familiar to us. We practice this new technique, own it, grow and then reach another “blank” where we once again dig deep and expand.

Really, the possibilities are endless.

 

It’s only beyond what we do know that we’re able to find what we don’t know.

And what we don’t know, we don’t know…. Huh??!! 😉

 

So, how do you learn to know what you don’t know?

  1. Accept it as a beautiful thing..

Look in to yourself and know that this is your moment to shine. Take a breath and appreciate that you are capable of bigger and greater, that you’re about to open up a world of new possibilities

 

  1. Allow yourself space..

Behaviours are born when you reach a boundary condition so give yourself time to question what you will do next.  This will allow creativity to flow more readily and calmness will bring more clarity. You will start to think differently and without realising it, you move outside your comfort zone

 

  1. Ask yourself these questions..

What if I did know?

What would I do now if I did know?

What are the possibilities here?

What’s the gift in this for me?

Finding appreciation in the situation eliminates fear – these two experiences (appreciation and fear) actually use the same neurons in the brain so they simply can’t exist in the same space! What a great piece of knowledge to draw from.

 

  1. Be self-aware..

Focus less on the problem and more on the solution. Respect the fact that we are probably going to have to make compromises along the way – all is not going to go perfectly fine. Think about the outcome and what needs to be accomplished. What are the minimum goals that you need to aim for? What conditions do you need to satisfy?

Think clearly about the boundary condition and the fact that you’ve reached one.

 

  1. Make a decision, take action..

You may not even know exactly where you’re going with your decision. Don’t put pressure on yourself just move forward, step by step, little by little, acknowledge yourself along the way, trying new resourceful ways of thinking and remove your limitations.  Albert Einstein said, “We are boxed in by the Boundary Conditions of our thinking”.  Don’t be!

 

When you allow yourself to grow, you use and share your new knowledge.

This creates an internal energy like a bolt of lightning that carves a path to your new possibilities and opens up space for the real magic to happen.

And as a powerful overflow, it carries in to all areas of life.

4 COMMON COMMUNICATION CHALLENGES … WITH SOLUTIONS THAT WILL WORK!

As it so often goes, staff can get stuck in the mundane, day to day task list.

They turn up to work, do their job – ticking off their accomplishments but get too bogged down to reach that ‘once upon a time’ level of high excitement, motivation… and more importantly innovation.

Chances are they’re stuck in a cycle, they – and you- are not sure how to communicate effectively at the moment.

..And you, as the leader have ‘tried everything’ to reinspire and motivate.

Tried ‘everything on each of them’.

I wonder though, have you looked at each of your team members individual challenges?

Or do you try the same technique for each one? You may even try what you know works for you?

Looking at each team members own unique self and isolating their personal challenges will provide answers on how to reignite their spark… and your bottom line.

 

Here are four types of problems that you’ll likely notice, with solutions that will transform and redefine your culture –

 

  1. Problem– LOSS OF FOCUS – Forgetting the roles and forgetting the goals leads to making small mistakes. This person will often create their own little informal groups.

Solution– Focus on the big picture, maintaining a positive attitude. Take the time to chat and talk, helping to achieve recognition. Avoid too many details.

 

  1. ProblemBOREDOM – Doesn’t stay in area of responsibility, seeking out new challenges (often not received). This team member becomes bored and uninterested in team work.

Solution– Act quickly with this person, focusing on the issues and providing direct answers.  Show interest and offer alternatives.  Enjoy the battle – they will! Avoid too much information and don’t take issues personally.

 

  1. ProblemBOGGED DOWN – Some can become so overly cautious that they are bogged down in the details and thus resist responsibility.

Solution– Listen carefully and find out what the key issues are with this person. Be thorough and provide factual responses. Avoid small talk and applying pressure.  Don’t expect decisions right away.

 

  1. ProblemRESISTS CHANGE – This can happen to many, but a good percentage will adjust in reasonable time. This team member will resist even the simplest of new procedures and become protective of their team. They are at a stand-still, full of opinion with no initiation.

Solution– Building trust is key here. Remember fairness and justice and provide support. Keep conversation slow and ask specific questions to find out their true needs. Avoid domination and unreliability.

 

 

Push through being stuck with a bit of patience and focus.

Progress is now inevitable, whilst you build trust and certainty within your organisation.
